Auditor Fitzpatrick now auditing the City of Brookfield at the request of residents

10/21/2026 - JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.

A Linn County community is now the target of a state performance audit launched by Missouri State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick in response to the concerns of residents. Fitzpatrick's office is conducting a petition audit of the City of Brookfield after 254 citizens of the north-central Missouri community signed a petition to request it.

"We take the concerns of the citizens of Brookfield very seriously and appreciate the time and effort they put into gathering the signatures necessary to trigger this audit. We will conduct a thorough review of the city's operations that will give citizens a better understanding of how their city government is operating and how it can improve. At the same time our audit will give city officials a road map they can use to help the city become more transparent, effective, and efficient," said Auditor Fitzpatrick.

This will mark the first time the State Auditor's Office has conducted a performance audit of the City of Brookfield. The audit was initiated by a citizen petition that received 254 signatures of registered, resident voters that were certified by the Linn County Clerk. Residents needed a minimum of 253 signatures to trigger the petition audit.

Individuals may provide information confidentially for consideration during the audit of the City of Brookfield to the State Auditor's Whistleblower Hotline at 800-347-8597, by email at moaudit@auditor.mo.gov, or by visiting www.auditor.mo.gov/hotline.
