Auditor Fitzpatrick announces citizen-requested audit of the City of Gilliam

08/14/2026 - JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.

A small community in Saline County is now the subject of a state audit according to Missouri State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick announced today his office has started a petition audit of the City of Gilliam at the request of 32 residents of the community who signed the petition.

"The petition audit process empowers citizens to hold their government officials accountable and to ensure their tax dollars are being spent properly. I appreciate the residents of Gilliam who took the time and made the effort to push this petition across the finish line. We will now do our part to conduct a thorough review of the city's governmental operations with the goal of identifying any major problems while also providing recommendations designed to help the city become more transparent, effective, and efficient," said Auditor Fitzpatrick.

This will mark the first time the State Auditor's Office has conducted a performance audit of the City of Gilliam since 1997. The audit was initiated by a citizen petition that received 32 signatures of registered, resident voters that were certified by the Saline County Clerk. Residents needed a minimum of 31 signatures to trigger the petition audit.

Individuals may provide information confidentially for consideration during the audit of the City of Gilliam to the State Auditor's Whistleblower Hotline at 800-347-8597, by email at moaudit@auditor.mo.gov, or by visiting www.auditor.mo.gov/hotline.
